Composite (Tooth-Colored) Fillings

When it comes to keeping your mouth happy and healthy, we at Puget Sound and Pediatric Dentistry are good – really good! Not only do we help you to keep your mouth healthy, but we also keep it looking great! For many years it was extremely hard to keep your smile looking good when you got a cavity because the only way to fill a cavity was with silver-colored amalgam – not anymore! Now we offer tooth-colored fillings that are made of a composite resin. These fillings allow you to keep more of your natural tooth while preserving the natural beauty of your smile.

What are composite fillings made of?

Composite fillings a mixture (composite) of glass, plastic, and a viscous liquid resin that is mixed in our office to create a clay-like material. As we mix this composite, we do so in a way that allows us to match it to the exact coloration of your teeth. Because we can so closely match the color of your teeth, the end product is almost completely indecipherable from your natural teeth.

What is the process for receiving a composite filling?

Placing composite fillings is very similar to placing any filling. The biggest difference between placing an amalgam filling and a composite one is that we don’t have to do as much drilling to produce a successful composite filling. As with all procedures here at Puget Sound and Pediatric Dentistry, your comfort comes first. We use some local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth so that you won’t feel a thing. Once we are sure that the site is numb, we can begin the procedure by removing the decay in your tooth with a dental drill.

Once we are sure that all the tooth decay has been removed we will rinse your tooth with an antibacterial rinse, and place the composite compound in the drilled area. We will form the composite resin to fit your tooth and your bite, and we will finish the procedure by solidifying the compound with a special ultraviolet light.

What else can composite resin do?

Because composite resin does such a good job at mimicking the aesthetic of your natural teeth, we can use it for some different dental applications. One of the most popular applications of this product (aside from fillings) is when it is used to form dental bonds.

If you crack or chip a tooth, we can often repair it using this composite resin. Dental bonding allows us to craft the smile that you desire quickly, and at a much lower cost than other cosmetic dental options like dental veneers.

The Best Way to Prevent Cavities

The best cavity treatment is to avoid them altogether with regular brushing and flossing. Make sure to always use a soft-bristled toothbrush after every meal. Flossing once a day is a great way to cut down on bacterial build-up between teeth.
