At Puget Sound Pediatric Dentistry, we are all about preventing oral maladies before they have a chance to form. This is especially important in pediatric dentistry where the oral health of a child is on the line. For this reason, we use digital x-rays to ensure that we catch oral health issues in your kid’s mouth while they are still in the early, preventable stages. When we catch issues like cavities when they are in the early stages, we can treat them, and they have a very low chance of becoming a problem in the future. Digital x-rays offer a safer experience to our patients than traditional x-rays and allow us to plan you’re your children's oral future!
What are X-rays used for?
Traditionally, x-rays are used for a wide variety of reasons, from giving us a clear view of teeth that have yet to come in, to helping us detect oral maladies like cavities that would otherwise be very difficult to detect. It is of critical importance that you bring your children into our office at least twice a year for regular dental cleanings and examinations so that we can keep a close eye on what is going on inside their mouth. Early adolescence is a very important time in the development and eruption of adult teeth, and it's also the time in a persons' life when they are most likely to form cavities.
Using x-rays we can determine when adult teeth will erupt, and if they will have difficulty, or if they will need professional dental intervention.
Preventing Impacted Teeth
An impacted tooth is a tooth that is unable to erupt properly because it is coming in at an incorrect angle, or because it will come into contact with another tooth as it erupts. An impacted tooth can cause issues ranging from oral infections to multiple teeth being lost. Using digital x-rays, we can track the progression of your children’s teeth and prepare for situations that may result in impacted teeth. Commonly impacted teeth are wisdom teeth and the canines (eye teeth).
Benefits of Digital X-Rays
Digital x-rays offer a wide variety of advantages over traditional x-rays. The biggest benefit is the significantly lower radiation exposure that digital x-rays offer. The digital x-ray format puts out roughly one-fifth of the radiation that a traditional x-ray machine does, putting it well below the recommended safety threshold. Low radiation is a big benefit of digital x-rays.
Digital x-rays also allow us to view your kid’s teeth in vivid high definition, immediately after taking them. No more waiting 20 minutes for x-rays to develop; instead, we can view your kids x-rays right away to save you time. We can even share these images with you and your child to help make you aware of areas in their mouth that need more attention during brushing and flossing.
