Childhood Dental Issues

Between sugar, accidents, bad habits and genetics, children can have a lot of dental issues. If you suspect your kid has any of these problems be sure to discuss your concerns with their dentist. Here are ten of the most common dental issues of childhood.

Dental IssuesTooth Decay

Tooth decay, also known as cavities or dental caries, is a big problem in the US. Tooth decay is caused by an accumulation of plaque on teeth. Over time plaque can form on teeth from a combination of bacteria, acid, saliva, sugar, and food particles. If plaque is left unattended, it can create tiny holes in the enamel and the tooth. Once this occurs a child can expect tooth pain, sensitivity while eating and drinking, and possibly pus from an infection.

Gum Disease

Periodontitis, more commonly referred to as gum disease, is an infection in the gums. This infection, like tooth decay, starts with a build-up of plaque. This is a very common childhood dental issues. When the plaque is left on teeth long enough, it will become encrusted under the gum line. This is called tartar, and it is much harder to remove. Receiving a proper dental cleaning will be needed to prevent gingivitis as brushing and flossing will not be enough at this point. If your child has sore or inflamed gums, bleeding, or a loose tooth due to tartar, it is time for a dental appointment.

Dental Erosion

More and more cases of dental erosion occur in children these days due to sugary foods and drinks. Kids drink a lot of juice and soda in this country, and their teeth are taking a beating for it. Because sugar is so acidic, it will erode teeth over time. Teeth can repair themselves if sugar is eliminated from the diet. Unfortunately, that can be difficult for children. If left unchecked teeth will discolor and wear down, leading to even more dental issues in the future.

Sensitive Teeth

Another common dental issue in children is tooth sensitivity. If your child is complaining about sharp or stabbing pain in or below their teeth, they may have sensitive teeth. The pain can occur in one or more teeth and is usually triggered by eating hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks. In some cases even breathing cold air can cause discomfort. It is essential to talk to your dentist to reduce pain if your child has sensitive teeth.

Malocclusion

When a child’s teeth are misaligned, it can cause a poor bite. In most cases, malocclusion only results in crooked teeth. In other cases, this childhood dental issue can cause difficulty in eating and speaking. If you suspect your child has this problem make an appointment with his or her dentist.

Bad Breath

This annoying and embarrassing problem is also known as halitosis. It can happen to anyone at any age. When children are plagued with bad breath, it’s usually a result of cavities, gum infections, and food.

Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a very common dental issue among young children. It can be difficult to change or break this habit due in part to the thumb being attached to the child at all times. When a child continues to suck their thumb past 5 years old, it can cause the teeth to shift. This misalignment of teeth can cause an overbite and other dental issues in the future. Your dentist can help you break the habit and save their teeth.

Tongue Thrusting

Tongue thrusting is another common dental problem in younger children. It occurs when an infant, toddler, or child pushes their tongue up toward the roof of the mouth and top front teeth. If the child is left to continue this habit, it may cause the front teeth to protrude outward.

Tooth Loss

In most cases, a wiggly tooth is a cause for celebration as a child waits for the tooth fairy. Sometimes baby teeth fall out too early, and that needs to be discussed with a dentist. This could be a warning sign of serious health issues. If the tooth that falls out is an adult tooth, make sure you call the dentist immediately. Be sure to save the tooth for the dentist if possible.

Damaged Teeth

Teeth are strong, but they can still become damaged. Eating hard candy or food is the most common cause for a tooth to crack or break. Other causes of damaged teeth may include fighting, falling, and accidents. In most cases, your dentist will be able to fix the problem before it can cause further pain or discomfort.

It is important to take your children to the dentist early and often. It can be a scary time for children who have little to no experience at the dentist’s office. Contact us today for any childhood dental issues your child may have.
